Gone Rural

Handwoven by skilled artisans using raw materials

Gone Rural works with more than 750 woman artisans across rural Swaziland by providing them with self-employed, home-based work. The woman are empowered with a sustainable income, while still allowing them to fulfil their traditional duties and provide care to their dependents. Gone Rural is also committed to addressing wider community needs by running health and education programs for artisans and their communities. Based primarily on grass weaving, an exquisite offering of baskets, bowls, placemats, tableware & floor mats has been created from Lutindzi grass, indigenous to the Swaziland mountains. The grass is sustainably harvested and coloured with eco dyes to produce beautiful functional artefacts. Constantly experimenting with new raw materials in both traditional and more modern techniques, the design process is practical and organic with the woman being continuously trained in developing new product styles. Gone Rural is a member of the World Fair Trade Organisation, and a founding member of SWIFT, Swaziland Fair Trade.
